Protect Yourself from Cholera When Travelling

If you’re planning a trip to a region where cholera is a risk, it’s important to take precautions. At Herbert & Shrive Pharmacy, based in Teddington & Kingston Upon Thames, we offer the oral cholera vaccine to help protect you when travelling.

We also welcome people from Hampton Wick, Richmond, and Twickenham. Our experienced pharmacists provide trusted, NHS-informed advice to keep you and your family safe and healthy.

What is Cholera?

Cholera is a serious bacterial infection that causes severe diarrhoea and dehydration. It’s usually caught from contaminated food or water, especially in areas with poor sanitation. Although it’s rare in the UK, travellers to parts of Africa, Asia, or the Middle East may be at risk.

Without quick treatment, cholera can become life-threatening. But with the right steps, it’s preventable.

How Can I Prevent Cholera When Travelling?

The best way to stay safe is to follow simple hygiene tips and consider getting vaccinated. Here are a few key steps:

  • Drink bottled or boiled water.
  • Avoid raw or undercooked food.
  • Wash your hands regularly.
  • Get the oral cholera vaccine before you travel.

At our cholera immunisation clinic, we can help you prepare for your trip with expert travel health advice and vaccinations.

Cholera Vaccine at Herbert & Shrive Pharmacy

The cholera vaccine we offer is taken by mouth – no needles involved! It’s a two-dose vaccine, taken about 1 to 6 weeks apart, ideally at least one week before your trip.

This oral vaccine helps protect against cholera for around two years, making it a smart choice for many travellers.

We’ll guide you through the process and make sure you’re protected and ready to go.

Who Should Get the Cholera Vaccine?

According to NHS guidance, the vaccine is recommended if you’re travelling to areas with a high risk of cholera, especially if you’ll be:

  • Staying in remote places with poor sanitation.
  • Working as an aid worker
  • Visiting areas during a cholera outbreak.

Not sure if you need the vaccine? Speak to us for a consultation, and we’ll help you decide.

Cholera Treatment

If you do get cholera while abroad, it’s important to start cholera treatment quickly. Treatment includes rehydration with fluids and salts and, in some cases, antibiotics. But prevention is always better than cure – and the vaccine is a key part of that.
