Chickenpox is a common infection that causes an itchy, spotty rash and is highly contagious
At Herbert & Shrive Pharmacy, we’re here to help families in Teddington, Kingston Upon Thames, Hampton Wick, Richmond, and Twickenham with expert advice, treatment, and the chickenpox vaccine.
What is Chickenpox?
Chickenpox is caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It’s most common in children but can affect anyone who hasn’t had it before. Early stage chickenpox often starts with a high temperature, feeling unwell, and loss of appetite, followed by red, itchy spots that turn into blisters.
Most cases are mild, but it can be more severe in adults, pregnant women, and people with a weakened immune system.

Chickenpox Symptoms
The main symptoms of chickenpox include:
- Small, itchy red spots that turn into fluid-filled blisters
- A high temperature
- Feeling tired or irritable.
- Loss of appetite.
The rash usually appears in waves and can spread across the whole body, including inside the mouth and around the eyes.
Chickenpox Treatment
While there’s no cure, chickenpox usually clears up in 1 to 2 weeks. You can manage symptoms with:
- Paracetamol for fever and discomfort.
- Use lotion and cooling gels to soothe the skin.
- Keeping nails short to prevent scratching and infection.
- Staying hydrated and resting.
Avoid ibuprofen unless advised by a healthcare professional, as it can lead to skin complications in chickenpox.
Chickenpox Vaccine
The vaccine for chickenpox is safe and effective in preventing the illness. It’s not currently part of the routine NHS childhood vaccination schedule, but it’s available privately at our pharmacy.
The chickenpox vaccine is given in two doses and is suitable for both children and adults who haven’t had the virus. It’s especially recommended for:
- Healthcare workers.
- People in close contact with vulnerable individuals.
- Parents who want to prevent their child from missing school or nursery.
We offer the chickenpox vaccine in Teddington and Kingston Upon Thames, with expert pharmacists ready to support you.
